It might have been our first or second newsletter when we let you know that Vari-Green or “VG” motors have been available from Greenheck for more than ten years. I also mentioned that these motors were ruining our parts business because they last so long.

Well, it got worse for the parts business. The Greenheck “Vari-Green” motor platform has been extended to include the 3-phase motor/drive combination shown above. Motor sizes go up to 5 hp for inline, 7.5 hp for propeller, and 5 hp for roof mount fans.

That top hat on the motor is an integrated VFD, so it’s ready “out of the box” for power and control. It has all of the prior VG control options such as dial control, two-speed, 0-10VDC speed control, and others. The drive is currently able to communicate via MODBUS, with BACnet coming soon.

The motor is no slouch either. It has IE5 efficiency, which is 2% to 4% higher in efficiency than NEMA Premium motors. Not bad! Stack that on top of the avoided belt losses and there are real energy savings to be had.

So please don’t shy away from this “VG” option when you see larger capacities requiring three phase power. It’s ready to go!
